NEW DELHI: Donald Trump went after China throughout his successful presidential campaign. Now, it seems, China is going after him. Just hours after he was declared the winner of the messy election and the next US President, a Chinese newspaper that is a mouthpiece of the country’s ruling party put out an editorial threatening Trump with “countermeasures” if he messes around with China-US trade.

Trump is a business man. He will negotiate the best deal for the US. The countries who have been riding on the coat tails of the Americans will be asked to find their own ride. In China”s case, China has full access to US market to buy US companies, but China does not provide same access. That will not continue anymore. Likewise India wants to export labor and farm produce to US, but does not play by the same rules. That will not work either. Similarly US has 40k troops in Germany, 50k in Japan, 30k in South Korea. Each country will need to be paying the cost or having their own troops defend their countries. US will not be taking any more economic refugees from Muslims countries. But India may actually benefit from a rules based system. But India will need to understand trade is a two way street.
