2015-11-10 15:33:56

For thefirst time in centuries, China affects the global economy as much as it isaffected by the global economy. In the years ahead, China is likely to accountfor betweenone-third and one-half of growth in global incomes, trade andcommodity demand, and its significance will only increase as its share of theworld economy rises.

Ireturned last week from a trip to China with the dispiriting conclusion thatthe world lacks shared understandings regarding goals for the evolution of theChinese economy, the objectives of China policy in the short and medium terms, and the institutional structures needed to manage both cooperation andinevitable tensions. Chinese President Xi Jinping has rightly called for a “newtype of great-power relations.” But it must be embedded in, if not anew international economic architecture, then a substantially revised andupdated one.

Chinainvests in schools, universities, manufacturing, businesses, trade, roads, bridges, railroads, renewable energies to resurrect its prominent place inhistory.

They havebeen big on infrastructure since they built the Wall.

Once apeople have experienced greater living standards there is no going back. Chinahas been around a lot longer than western civilization, we all have to live inthis world together. There doesn't have to be a loser for another to be awinner. That is the game of power hunger, one that wants to dominate. That isnot good for humanity.

True,Giantsmax. There does not need to be a loser for another person to be a winner. There is such a thing as a win-win situation contrary to what the "AmericaFTW!" nimrods would have us believe.

Don'tblame China when you live beyond your means & containing them is akin tokicking yourself in the butt & this include your POTUS.

eeyaw, Iam getting tired of hearing the bunkus from uber-conservatives that"Americans are living beyond their means!" No, Americans are beingunderpaid today when you compare income adjusted for inflation 40 years ago toincome today.
Some ofour costs (health care and insurance especially) have gotten outrageous aswell.

ourobjective must continue to be mutual growth and prosperity
Yeah, except almost all the growth has been in China and almost none in the US. Inthe meantime the gigantic trade deficits with China are hemorrhaging jobs fromthe US. Apart from making China stronger (which we suddenly find is not such agreat idea) what has our current policy achieved to benefit the US (other thancheap manufactured products)?

yours isa typical zero-sum game argument that has typically and historically led towars at some point. summers (and china) are talking about resolving theeconomic issues between us from a win-win perspective.

Does theworld really want a dictatorship that maintains it's own isolation to have anygrowth in their impact on people worldwide. In the 60's they killed over 30million of their own people with wild policies and continued with other insanepolicies for decades. Now they are focused on militarily controlling the entireSouth Pacific region, much like Japan did. They constantly threaten war, stating they "aren't afraid of a war with the US; "we can hit the USwith nuclear missiles, etc. What kind of people just come out saying thingslike this? Anyone want these kind of people having more power then they do now?Wise minds look at the past as a predictor of the future.

It ispointless to discuss the economies of nations in isolation from their politics.
