When a whole US Navy carrier group is in the South China seas, what could an artificial island can do for China other than symbolism? Can it have any strategic importance? It might just work during a tense non war like situation but probably useless during war because it can’t move and everyone can see where it is and what’s on it. But once US Navy presence goes away, even a Chinese fishing boat will be enough to make any sort of claim.
