BEIJING: China says it will complete land reclamation projects on its disputed South China Sea territorial claims as planned within “upcoming days.”
A statement from the Foreign ministry Tuesday said China would build infrastructure to carry out functions ranging from maritime search and rescue to environmental conservation and scientific research.
中国表示，未来几天内中国会按计划完成南海造地项目。
外交部周二发表的一份声明称，中国会修建用于从海洋研究，到环境保护再到科研等的基础设施。
Apart from satisfying defense purposes, it said the main purpose of such projects was civilian in nature and not targeted at any third parties. China says the projects are legal, justified and within the scope of Chinese sovereignty.
The reclamation work has raised tensions with the United States, and Vietnam and other countries in the region which fear China will use the artificial islands as military bases and to assert control over navigation in the South China Sea.
除了满足国防目的，声明称此类项目主要用于民用，并不针对第三国家。中国强调这些项目是合法合理的，处于中国领土范围内。
据悉，填海造地项目引起了美国、越南以及该地区其他周边国家的紧张，这些国家担心中国把人工岛当做军事基地，从而控制南海的航行。
