The United States and European unx reacted quite differently to the recent South China Sea arbitration ruling with the European bloc distancing itself from the transatlantic ally’s sharpest approach to the issue. Washington bluntly called on Beijing to respect the legal decision handed out by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague on July 12 as Brussels loosely backed the arbitrators’ work and urged all parties involved to act with restrain and according to the international law.

Do not allow China to buy U.S. T-Bills
Do not allow Chinese nationals to buy U.S. assets including property.

How far a country will go depends on how much it's worth to them.
Value is relative.
-To Philippines South China Sea means fishing grounds.
-To Europe South China Sea means nothing.
-To China South China Sea means $5 trillion a year of shipping lanes 90% of which are imports and exports to/from Chinese ports. If someone else (say America) were to control it and chokes it off China is looking at its version of the Great Depression.
They've seen what happened in Iraq Libya Syria and they see Trump might become president next year. They think America cannot be trusted to not slit someone else's throat they think that only China can be trusted to not slit its own throat.
How far do you think they'll go to defend their own lifeline? The rational answer is: all the way.
How far is America willing to go to defend "freedom of navigation" aka American control of China's lifeline? That's complicated because it depends on how much it's worth to America which is complicated.
-To America South China Sea is worth whatever the idea of American Global Cop is worth. It's an idea it's not a value that can be measured so there is no rational answer.
